Kimberly's Story: Living Proof of God’s Transforming Power

HRS Team

Updated: 2 days ago

Before coming to House of Refuge Sunnyslope (HRS), I lacked discipline and struggled with bad habits. For years, I couch surfed, I even lived out of my car. My soul cried out for the Lord, but my flesh refused to listen.

I reached out to HRS while living in a hotel, with my check-out date quickly approaching. My savings was gone. Fear gripped me. The thought of my daughter having no stability broke my heart. I hit rock bottom. In desperation, I finally cry out to the Lord, and He showed up in a big way. He rescued me.

Because of Him and because of the program at HRS I now see a better future for myself and my daughter.

When I first arrived at HRS, my first thought was, what a beautiful property. I felt absolutely blessed to have an apartment waiting for me on the exact day I had to leave the hotel. That wasn’t a coincidence. That was God.

By day four, I knew without a doubt that the Lord loved me and that I am exactly where I needed to be. The structure of the program and its foundation in biblical principles gives me exactly what I need. The rules help me gain discipline, something I have always lacked. Now, I am a centered woman.

The staff, volunteers, and fellow residents at HRS support me every step of the way. I am so grateful that everyone here is obedient to the Lord. Every time the staff shows up to do their job, it allows the Lord to complete His plan for all the women in this program. One of the best parts of being here is that when I need prayer, I can count on them to pray for me.

I have learned so much. I could spend weeks talking about it. But truly, I have learn how to read and study the Bible, how to trust in the Lord, how to budget, how to grocery shop, and so much more. I trust the Lord in everything I do. I am proud to say that I am no longer a woman without discipline. I now have structure and a routine. I am a better mother, daughter, sister, and friend.

Looking ahead, I have a strong desire to pursue college and am preparing to take that step soon. I trust that with prayer and seeking the Lord, all things are possible. This program completely transformed my life.

When I was searching for a home in my season of homelessness, I never imagined that I was stepping into an opportunity for true renewal. When I was searching for a home in my season of homelessness, I never imagined the possibility of such true renewal. Today, I am a strong, healthy woman with a clear vision for my future. I know without a doubt that Jesus loves me, and that makes all the difference.

I am so grateful to everyone who supports HRS. I hope they realize how much they are helping women turn their lives around. Because of their support, they allow the Lord to rewrite story after story of women in this program—including mine.

To anyone looking for help, allow yourself to be loved by the Lord so you don’t miss out on the healing He wants for you. Be teachable. That is the most important thing you can do while at HRS. Sometimes, our ways are what get us into trouble. Learn His ways, because they are so much greater.

This program is amazing. And I am living proof of what God can do.
