The Choice to Change

Before coming to House of Refuge Sunnyslope, Everth was doing what he could to keep moving forward. He had been working as a medical transporter, but when that job ended and he no longer had a place to stay, he found himself in a difficult and uncertain season. Looking for help, he called 2-1-1, and that call led him to House of Refuge Sunnyslope.

Everth came to House of Refuge Sunnyslope about ten months ago. In the beginning, the transition was not easy. He described those first few months as “tough,” especially trying to find steady work without reliable transportation. He did what he could, including daily labor, showing up as early as 4:00 in the morning, even though there was no guarantee of work. Still, he kept going. Eventually, another resident connected him to a job opening, and Everth took it right away. That opportunity helped him begin building stability and momentum.

As he settled into the program, Everth found more than just a safe place to stay. He found support, structure, and a community that helped him keep moving forward. When asked what he liked most about being at House of Refuge Sunnyslope, he shared that it was “nice, it’s comfortable, it’s a nice place,” and that the program gave him a schedule and environment that felt safe and steady. He especially appreciated that he was not left to figure everything out on his own. “You’re helping… it’s not like you’re on your own here,” he said.

Everth also spoke honestly about his past struggles and the choices he wanted to leave behind. Reflecting on addiction and homelessness, he said those experiences forced him to ask himself,

“Do you want that, or do you want something different?” His answer was clear: “No, I don’t want it. So you gotta go for what you want.” 

That determination, paired with a strong work ethic and a desire for a different future, helped shape his journey.

During his time at House of Refuge Sunnyslope, Everth also experienced spiritual growth. One of the most meaningful moments for him was being baptized. “That was cool,” he said. “That helped… a lot spiritually speaking.” His faith became another source of strength and grounding as he worked to rebuild his life.

Today, Everth is in a very different place than when he first arrived. He has already moved out of the housing program and is continuing to work toward full independence. In fact, he now works three jobs, something he takes pride in because it keeps him focused and moving forward.

For Everth, staying busy matters.

“I like it because it keeps me away from any trouble, any negativity,” he shared. “When you’re working, you’re making money, so it’s good for your finances.”

Everth’s story is one of resilience, hard work, and hope. He came to House of Refuge Sunnyslope during a season of instability, but through perseverance, community, faith, and opportunity, he has continued to move forward. He describes House of Refuge Sunnyslope as “a great program” and believes that “you can move on if you really want to.”

Today, Everth is doing exactly that—moving on, moving forward, and building a new future for himself.
