A Life God Refused to Let Go

Elizabeth’s story begins in a place of deep brokenness, where addiction, loss, and homelessness collided in a way she never imagined for her life.

Before coming to House of Refuge Sunnyslope, Elizabeth had spent years caught in addiction that slowly took everything from her. What began as occasional use turned into a daily dependence that left her unable to function, even as a mother. When she tried to stop, her body would shut down. “I would sleep like four to five days… I couldn’t function without it.”

Eventually, everything unraveled. After admitting her struggle and asking for help, she was forced to leave her home. With nowhere to go, she found herself alone, driving, crying, and unsure of what would come next.

That moment marked the beginning of nearly four years of homelessness in Phoenix.

During that time, survival became her only focus. Days blurred together. Holidays passed unnoticed. She lived without stability, often trading whatever she could find just to sustain her addiction.

“We don’t know what day it is… we don’t even know the holidays.”

What’s striking is that Elizabeth did not expect to survive those years. In her mind, she was simply waiting to die.

“I don’t want to live anymore… I just expected to be dead.”

But something shifted.

One day, in the middle of that darkness, she had a realization that would change everything. “I’m not even dead yet… I’m not going to keep going on waiting to die.”

That moment became the turning point. For the first time in years, she allowed herself to consider that life could be different. That she might still have a future. That she might even see her children again.

Soon after, she made a call to detox. What followed was not easy. She spent ten days in detox, completed six months of recovery, and walked through the long, difficult process of rebuilding her life from the ground up.

Then came the next step.

Through a connection at St. Mary’s, Elizabeth was introduced to House of Refuge Sunnyslope. With nowhere else to go, she made the call and walked through the doors the very next day.

That decision changed everything.

At House of Refuge, Elizabeth found more than just a place to stay. She found structure, purpose, and people who believed in her. She completed programs, secured employment, and began rebuilding the life she once thought was gone forever.

She also found something deeper. Healing.

Last year, Elizabeth was baptized at House of Refuge Sunnyslope, a powerful step in her journey of surrender, renewal, and new life in Christ.

Today, after more than a year in the program, her life looks completely different.

She is working toward a new career, moving forward with stability, and most importantly, she has been reconciled with her family.

The relationships that once felt permanently broken have been restored. Her husband has changed. Her family has come back together. And Elizabeth has stepped into a new chapter marked by hope instead of despair.

She has successfully moved forward, not just leaving homelessness behind, but walking into a future she once believed was impossible.

Her story is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest places, transformation is possible.

And maybe, just maybe, God was not done with her yet.
